Luxury Travel to Morocco – is it worth it?

Over the past 8 years of living and working in Morocco, I have been asked the question, “Is luxury travel to Morocco really worth is?” To many, Morocco has been best known for inexpensive backpacker’s travel down from Europe. Thousands of young people visit Morocco each year looking for adventure and culture, yet on a shoe-string budget. As of recent, Morocco has been attracting some high-end travel companies and travelers looking to experience the real Morocco, yet enjoying it in style. Thus the question, “Does Morocco offer a luxury alternative for those looking for something more?”

The answer to this question is definitely “yes!” Over the past few years, we have seen a development of the “Riads” of Morocco. These beautifully restored houses and palaces have given a luxury alternative for those looking to truly taste Morocco culture but in a 4 or 5 star setting. Riads normally offer 8 – 15 rooms offer the touch of class with the hospitality of Morocco. Your host will treat you as a guest in his home…this cannot be said of the 5 star hotels.

How do the 5 star hotels compare in Morocco to Europe? No doubt there are some excellent luxury hotels in Fes and Marrakech; however, many 5 star clients have told us that the generic 5 star hotels lack some of the finer details that would be found in Europe. For this reason alone, we highly recommend to those looking to travel to Morocco in luxury to use the 5 star riads. You will not be disappointed.

Perhaps one area that Morocco has excelled in over other Africa tourism destinations is the quality of professional driver / guides. We have polled many travelers leaving Morocco who have expressed their appreciation to their drivers. Recently one made a very strong statement, “Our driver not only became a friend but felt like one of our family!” This type of comment speaks volumes to those looking for something extra special.

Luxury can also be found in the cuisine of Morocco. One does not have to spend a bundle to experience the lavished hospitality of Morocco. Any of the 5 star riads mentioned above will put on an evening spread that will make you feel like a king. Morocco has its share of high-dollar restaurants that boast fabulous food and a beautiful setting; so if that is your style, do your research before you come and request a reservation at one of these establishments.

All said and done, Morocco does offer a luxurious alternative to those wishing to experience the authentic Morocco with some style. Leave your backpack at home and come visit the beautiful country of Morocco.
