Holidaymakers looking to exchange the UK’s dark skies and rainy days for some guaranteed sun this season should go to the Canary Islands. A mix of good weather, accessibility and cheap hotels makes the Canaries a popular winter destination.

Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote are the four biggest isles in the Canary Islands and have long been drawing winter sun seekers to their shores. On the same latitude as locations such as Orlando, Florida, and New Delhi, India, the area has over 300 days of sunshine a year, with average temperatures remaining above 20°C from May through to the start of January.

The volcanic features of the region helps to keep the heat turned up, an additional bonus for visitors. The landscape of the Canary Islands has been shaped over thousands of years by their volcanic beginnings, producing an array of natural marvels such as the world’s longest recorded submarine lava tunnel, which can be found in Lanzarote. Tenerife is home to its very own volcano, the presently dormant Mount Teide, which is the highest peak in Spain.

Alongside the welcoming attitude and friendliness common of island holiday locations, the Canaries present a taste of Spanish zeal and excitement, from their lively fiestas to their dynamic nightlife. Each of the Canary Islands caters superbly to tourists, with a wide range of things to do and attractions, as well as comfortable and convenient accommodation. If you are looking for a first-rate place to lay your head, Lanzarote hotels will not let you down. For more family friendly places to crash, search for hotels in Tenerife. But if you are keen to try out the water sports in Fuerteventura, stay somewhere inexpensive as you will not being hanging out in your room much.

The Canary Islands offer much more than your typical beach holidays, so it is no shock they have remained so popular with holidaymakers over the years. Their weather and proximity to Britain are a winning unbeatable. Flight times from London to Lanzarote’s Arrecife airport are around 4 hours; so you can find yourself enjoying Florida temperatures in very little time at all.

While the lush rainforest of St. Kitts’ interior has long been a destination for eco-tourists and adventurous travelers, this pristine natural area is now home to a attraction that will entice all types of visitors. Constructed in an environmentally-conscious fashion amongst the remarkable tropical scenery of the rainforest, Sky Safari allows visitors to cruise above the rainforest floor, while enjoying a bird’s-eye view of all types of wildlife and sights across the island. Already recognized as one of the finest zip-line systems in the Caribbean region, Sky Safari tours promise all visitors a safe, exciting ride on the industry’s most-advanced equipment. While the beaches and resorts remain the big draws in St. Kitts, visitors of all ages hoping to explore one of the island’s most beautiful and overlooked areas should take advantage of Sky Safari’s new zip-line tours.

Though Sky Safari tours visit some of the St. Kitts’ most remote locations, all tours begin at the centrally-located Wingfield Estate beside the one of the island’s most popular historic destinations, Romney Manor. At the Wingfield Estate base, visitors will have a chance to get the hang of the zip-line system on the tour’s first line, the 140-foot-long Monkey Trainer. Before embarking on a trip down the Monkey Trainer Line, visitors will be given an orientation on the system’s features and prepared for the longer, higher lines that await them in the rainforest.

After completing the trip down the Monkey Trainer Line, visitors will be taken on a short off-road trip to one of the best viewpoints in the rainforest. From a peak overlooking the Valley of the Giants – a section of the rainforest known for its towering trees – visitors will get their first look of the incredible 1400-foot-long Boss Line. At a height of 250 feet above the rainforest floor, tourists will be able to zoom downhill towards the Wingfield River at speeds up to 50 miles per hour. While enjoying the exhilarating ride, tourists will also be able to enjoy views of everything from the lush rainforest canopy and nearby volcanic peaks to groomed plantations and distant coastal sights.

The third line of the Sky Safari system – the 1,000-foot-long Mango Tango Line – extends even deeper into the rainforest and is known for its dense canopy and opportunities for wildlife viewing. The full zip-line tour continues with a trip along the 900-foot-long Brimstone Blast Line that offers views of the island’s most famous colonial attraction, the Brimstone Hill Fortress. Most tours end with a trip down the 500-foot-long River Rocker Line that follows the riverbank and ends near a natural pool where visitors are encouraged to cool off.

Sky Safari’s full tour option allows visitors to experience all five lines of the system over two and a half hours. The half tour option, scheduled for one hour and 50 minutes, includes trips down the Monkey Trainer Line, the Brimstone Blast line and the River Rocker Line. At the end of both the full and half tours, visitors will have a chance to swim in the natural pool located beneath the River Rocker Line. Those that want to spend more time walking through the rainforest can sign up for the three-line plus river walk tour. Over two hours and ten minutes, visitors will have a chance to experience the Monkey Trainer Line, the Mango Tango Line and the Brimstone Blast Line. After completing the third line, visitors will then be able to enjoy a pleasant downhill hike along the riverbank to the natural pool.

The Sky Safari zip-line tours in St. Kitts have already gained a reputation throughout the Caribbean for their environmentally-conscious operations and commitment to state-of-the-art equipment. All of the zip-lines in the Sky Safari tour are anchored by rocks, meaning the rainforest’s old-growth trees are left unharmed, while the company’s off-road vehicles will soon be outfitted to run on bio-fuels. Visitors have also taken notice of the comfortable paragliding-inspired harnesses and advanced braking systems that allow riders to come to smooth stop automatically.

Since zip-line tours were created twenty years ago in Costa Rica, this unique outdoor activity has gained incredible popularity in destinations as diverse as Hawaii and British Columbia. Now, with the creation of Sky Safari in St. Kitts, the Caribbean region can boast a zip-line tour that is truly on par with the world’s best. While there is certainly much to see on the island, families in search of adventure in St. Kitts will not want to this remarkable new attraction.

Many people have heard of the great family holiday destination that is Majorca, but may not know about some of the great attractions the island has to offer. In this article we are going to look at some amazing places you can visit next time you are in Majorca.

The Beaches

It seems an obvious choice, but the beaches of Majorca really are one of the main attractions on the island. With over 300 days of sun a year, make sure you visit some of the main beaches in Magaluf, Palma Nova, Alcudia and PuertoPollenca.

Caves of Drach

There are many spectacular caves dotted around Majorca and one of the most stunning is the Caves of Drach at Portocristo. Adults and children alike will love seeing the four chambers and the thousands of stalactites that are impressively lit. A highlight of the cave tour, will no doubt be the gondolier boat ride on the underground lake.

City of Palma de Majorca

One of the only true cities in the Balearics, the city of Palma is very different from what you would expect. It has a much slower pace than most Spanish cities but has plenty to offer. The historic quarter has grand mansions dating back to the Renaissance and Baroque churches that make for a stunning backdrop to any stroll around the city. While walking around the city in the day is very enjoyable, during the night, the floodlit cathedral and palace are simply stunning to see.

Train from Palma to Soller

The train that leaves Palma and runs to Soller makes for a great day out. The train has been running this route since 1912 and takes an hour to reach its destination. Along the ride you will travel through stunning countryside, almost making you wish the ride wouldn’t finish so quickly. Once you reach your destination in Soller, you can travel to the Port of Soller via a slow moving electric tram.

Bellver Castle

This unique circular castle dates back to the 14th Century and is a real treat to visit. The name Bellver means “beautiful view” and the view of the Bay of Palma is the main reason so many people come and visit.

The island of Majorca has many more attractions to offer its visitors, so why not read up on what is available so you will be fully prepared for what no doubt will be a wonderful holiday.

As you would expect from an island with such a dominant position it has attracted a lot of visitors, some unwelcome, over the centuries but now welcomes the current day tourist with welcome arms and the promise of a wonderful holiday whatever the time of year.

With 7000 years of history Malta has a host of worthy sites and buildings to see ranging from some of the oldest standing buildings in the world through Medieval houses, Baroque Palaces and Renaissance Cathedrals. As ownership of many islands in the Mediterranean changed hands during ancient times, Malta too was subjected to a series of rulers, invaders, exiles and benefactors. This sequence of changes has left a rich variety of remains and relics that are available to see to today. In modern history Malta played a huge part in the 2nd World War when the British Navy was based here and the island was subjected to long periods of artillery pounding. This British influence can still be seen today in the form of the cast iron red pillar boxes of which there are still over 160 on Malta and are listed as national monuments and also the British red phone box albeit now adorned with a modern telephone company’s logo.

To get a feel of how Malta was during the times of earlier invaders there is a regular pageant entitled Alarme, the re-enactment of the skirmishes between the Maltese militia and Napoleon’s troops from the period 1798-1800. Taking place on the third Sunday of February, March, April, May, June, Oct and November this dramatises the arrival of the French, the Maltese rebellion and then the subsequent arrival of the British troops. Organised by the Maltese Tourist board, this exciting event can be seen in the authentic surroundings of Fort St Elmo.

Malta also organises a number of other festivals, many smaller ones in the local villages but also the more international Malta Jazz Festival in July, the Malta Tattoo, the Malta Fireworks Festival in Spring and a series of pop concerts.

Reflecting its history, weather and fantastic location Malta has been regularly used recently by the movie industry for filming and in fact quite an industry has built up over the last twenty years to cater services for this. Some of the films that used Malta for shooting include the original Casino Royale, The Da Vinci Code, Troy and Gladiator starring Russell Crow, which included scenes shot at Fort Ricasoli.

The capital, Valletta, is a interesting city with the hustle and bustle of modern life set in narrow roads of ancient buildings, churches and cathedrals. A visit to and tour of the ancient port is essential for the visitor. In contrast, the old city of Mdina is a peaceful and relaxed place set in the middle of the island with its honey coloured limestone buildings magnificent under the blue skies a great reminder of the island’s past.

Of course Malta is not just about its great history and magnificent buildings, it also has typical Mediterranean weather ideal for the tourist who wants a relaxing beach holiday in a destination that is not too far from home. You are never far from sandy beaches, rocky inlets, and a variety of restaurants with food choices reflecting the island’s past multicultural residents, good hotels and nightlife ensuring that all tastes are catered for.

Malta’s climate is generally mild and fine all year round, the hotter summer months pleasantly tempered some what by the sea breezes and the winter months being mild although sea temperatures can drop during November-February making swimming a bracing activity.

The Maltese islands are made up of three islands – Malta, which is the biggest; Gozo, the mythical island of Calypso; and Comino, a tiny landmass known for its Blue Lagoon, a special diving spot at the Mediterranean’s heart.

Malta is surrounded by many attractions. There are labyrinthine tunnels and caves shaped naturally. There are wartime wrecks at a depth of only 10-80 mtrs in the water, plus beautiful reefs. For underwater photographers, Malta is a dream destination. Marine life in Maltese islands is sparkling with bright colors. You can find octopi, gurnards, groupers, barracuda, red mullet, conger eels, flying fish, and even the rare sea perch, which has seemed to vanish from the Mediterranean.

Malta and Gozo have a variety of dive centers. Some of these are more than 30 years old. Professional and licensed diving instructors give diving lessons to beginners as well as divers. Most of the courses are recognized internationally.

If you think, being an island, Malta may be devoid of a night life and glitz of a European city, you’re wrong. The seafront resorts of these islands are cosmopolitan in nature, and offer a stylish and glamorous atmosphere for fun lovers. What is more, unlike cities, these islands offer a tranquil environment along the coastline, with a breathtaking view of the ocean. So, the place caters to the needs of party animals as well as the needs of seekers or solitude.

The latest news Malta is online gaming. Some important news channels as well as other business firms have also shown interest in creating a hub in these islands. On one hand, you have the casinos and cafes; on the other hand, you have the fresh breeze right from the ocean, plus an atmosphere of solitude. There are activities here that pump adrenalin and there are spots that bring absolute relaxation.

It might disturb you to know about the illegal hunting of migratory birds in Malta in the recent years. These birds migrate from Europe to Africa, and Malta falls in their route. Most of the hunting is done during spring and autumn migration. Hunters target birds flying overhead. This has led the conservationist group called Bird Life Malta to set up camps to thwart hunters.

No matter from which part of the world we come from, it’s our duty to protect and preserve the beauty of such a beautiful place from the callous acts of insane and uncouth people. Malta offers not only natural beauty, but also a number of events all year round. There are land and water sports, tennis, golf, horse-riding, rock climbing, windsurfing, sailing, and lots more. The Maltese islands provide a unique cultural experience and spectacular historical sites, along with ample of leisure as well as thrilling activities. This makes it one of the most sought after vacation spots by tourists.

Malta is constantly bustling with activities. Hence, every now and then you can hear breaking news Malta. Lots of interesting stuff happens here. Every day makes news. It’s really a place to come and spend time in. It’s hard to forget the vastness of the ocean and the warmth of these islands.

Where we live in the heart of the Southern Alps in New Zealand, poking large logs into the log burner is an endless winter chore. The mountains had a good dusting of snow and it was only mid May, well May can be a bit like that. I knew worse was to come as winter hadn’t really officially started.

Throwing on a second merino top and tossing a beanie and gloves into my back pack, I was heading out for a hike in the mountains, answering the phone as I bounded down the stairs, wow! It was the agency I had been working with in Australia last winter. They were not only bragging about the lovely temps of 26C in Northern Queensland, but offering me a 9 week contract in the Tiwi Islands 90km off the coast of Darwin.

Now we are talking turkey! Tropical Islands – Northern Territory – spelt out warmth and endless blue skies. Could I be there in 5 days – well – yes, I quickly rang the husband who was taking the rich and famous out touring the high points of our area, he was 100% keen, so off I went out walking with the friends and of course regaling them with the latest developments.

Back home tired and hungry I jumped into over drive and booked air tickets to Brisbane, the agency took care of the rest of the travel arrangements. So all I had to do now was gather up some clothes and buy mountains of reading material, I was silently wishing I had one of those ‘Kindles’ and mentally put that on the list of things I really do need.

I put the Gortex Jackets, icebreakers, gloves and beanies in moth balls and ha ha let everyone in the world know where I was off to. I rushed around saying goodbyes to my 3 kids and 9 special grandchildren, I knew I would miss them heaps, but I have Skype on my computer and oh I love that Skype. The husband would follow at a later date when he got sorted.

Whew – Off to Brisbane – landed – swapped planes and on to Darwin, temps were about 29C there – de-lic-ious – a dive into the hotels swimming pool, dinner, a sleep over and away on Tiwi Air at midday to Nguiu on Bathurst Island. There are two islands, Bathurst which I was to be on, and Melville, with a 500m stretch of water between them – brilliant sparkling turquoise crocodile infested ocean, I heard it was also shark hunting ground.

Some of the old boys on the island told me tales of how they used to swim between the two islands when they were kids, in the days when crocodiles weren’t protected and good money was paid out for their skins. In fact I had recently seen a TV programme on the value of the skins, hand bags fetching the prices of waterfront apartments at Double Bay. Now that they are protected the crocodiles have gone forth and multiplied, hence the numbers are increasing hugely and are the number one hazard in the Northern Territory.

The 20 minute flight from Darwin landed at Nguiu airport where Kim, another agency nurse was there to meet me in the clinic’s white 4WD ute. Kim was the Kids nurse at the clinic, a Queensland girl who had been there for 3 weeks and said “Don’t you love it” after every sentence. Well I didn’t know if I did or not, but nodded and smiled and loved the enthusiasm and was definitely warming up to love it.

At the clinic I was introduced to everyone, god I shall never remember all these names, the boss was in Hospital, the only person that knew the finer points of the clinic was on holiday and possibly had the dreaded swine flu. I was literally thrown in and don’t you love it? My accommodation was a solid 2 bedroom unit with a great garden, bananas; paw paws lemons, hibiscus, frangipani and bougainvilleas of many colours dripping off the branches. Gums and bamboo, a nice fern garden and the best part, there was plenty of water from a fresh water bore.

About 300m away was a nice long beach and the dreaded crocodile infested stretch of water and where the tide waxed and waned and on the other side of my house was a beautiful 25m swimming pool beautifully landscaped, clean and inviting. I was going to be just sweet here.

So down to the local totally fenced in super market, littered with plastic bottles, dogs, kids, pushchairs and red dust, I was so glad I had bought my old runners. Inside the noise was horrendous everyone yelling in Tiwi at their kids, families and each other. The food seemed thin on the shelves and I was so stunned I couldn’t think or begin to search for the basics, at this stage it looked like the basic’s where Coca’ Cola and potato chips and those ‘coke’ bottles were moving out the door so fast a greyhound couldn’t compete.

So this was my introduction to Nguiu – scary – now I had to get a handle on the culture, the people and the work. But that’s another story.

There are many suggestions offered by the family when conversations around the dinner table turn to holiday destinations. The kids will probably have some sort of entertainment-based suggestions, and the older set will probably want to go somewhere and sit around a lot! All these are fine ideas, and each has its merits. However, you may have something else in mind. The next time it becomes the topic of conversation, throw the idea of eco-tourism into the ring. The kids are likely to groan and the older family members will take on a tired look! However, armed with the following information you can pitch this idea and watch the excitement grow.

In the past ten to twenty years there has been a boom in the interest of travelling to places rich in natural history. There are spots around the world that are worthy of holiday simply because they exist. We humans almost forgot what it meant to commune with the natural world simply because it is here! The last great trend of this manner was in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In response to the growing urbanisation and industrialisation in our lives, we sought out the tranquillity and clean air of “the country.” Back then this was limited to locations in relatively close proximity to home unless you were among the wealthier set. Transportation was crude or cost prohibitive. Now times have changed.

The great bonus to this revival is that we do not have to completely forgo the creature comforts we are all so used to in our lives, nor do we have to limit our choices based on distance. We have the world as a destination and the modern transportation to carry us there! One of the most pristine destinations on the planet for eco-tourism is the Galapagos Islands. This group of 13 islands was made famous by the visits of Charles Darwin. As a result of his experiences, he penned his Theory of Evolution which impacted human thought around the planet. Most people have seen the movies and specials on the TV all about the islands’ natural beauty. Now there are many opportunities to actually visit.

What an amazing place to visit!

The Galapagos are located 1000 km off the coast of Ecuador. The weather is hospitable year-round so any dates are good choices for holiday travel. June to December is considered the dry season and the tradewinds make the waters cooler. This is an excellent time for viewing the activities of sea mammals and birds. The season between December and May, called the warm season, is more tropical in temperament and is therefore perfect for swimming and snorkelling. The capital city of Quito or the city of Guayaquil will likely be your hopping off point for flights to the islands. There are three flights daily leaving for the Galapagos, so there are no long-term delays in reaching this nature haven.

If cruising is more your speed, there are many tour companies that offer all manner of water transportation to the islands. You will have a choice of more intimate small crafts of 20 or so passengers, which allow very up-close and personal docking experiences. Or you may desire a larger ship with more amenities and lots of opportunities for the older generation to “sit” if so desired! The latter are limited to 100 passengers for the safety of the eco-system.

You can come in by boat

Now in order to silence the groans of the kids, you may want to avail yourself of the many adventure travel packages in the Galapagos. These are real-life telly adventures in and among the indigenous wildlife of the islands. There are guided kayak tours with the dolphins, mountain biking in the pristine wilderness areas, snorkelling multi-colour reefs, plane hopping between islands and the ever-popular speedboat rides. These are infinitely more thrilling than that amusement park the kids thought they wanted to visit! If there are no kids in the picture, you can choose this option and a level of difficulty to make this a true outdoor adventure.

If you would like to stay on the islands, there are several first class hotels to accommodate you. These are not the huge impersonal chains where we often find ourselves on holiday. The offerings in the Galapagos are almost as interesting as the island itself with their rich histories and unique architecture. Recently the islands have added luxury tent accommodation to allow the visitors to have an explorer’s experience, without all the inconveniences of days gone by, of course.

There are some excellent hotels

The main reason to travel to the Galapagos is to have an unfettered experience with the wildlife. Gawking and camera snapping from we humans nonplus the animals of the islands. Here you can have interaction with the creatures we share the planet with in their natural surroundings. The giant tortoises, land iguanas and marine iguanas are there in abundance. Lava lizards and three species of snakes, all non-venomous, are also inhabitants along with two species of bats. There are no large carnivores, which is the speculated reason that all other land animals have seemingly lost their “fear” response.

The waters around the island are rich with sea turtles; several whale species and the frolicking of bottle-nosed dolphins that love to ride the bow wave of the ships. There are also rays, California sea lions and fur seals. Remember this home belongs to the plants and animals of the Galapagos, and we are merely visiting. The rule in the Galapagos is “people cannot touch them, but they can touch us.” It is a thrilling experience to have a baby sea lion nuzzle your feet as you stand at the water’s edge!

See some of the cool wildlife!

Tourism to the Galapagos has increased from 1,000 visitors per year forty years ago to 80,000 visitors per year in the recent past. This impact is strictly regulated and the fragile eco-system carefully guarded by the local authorities. The unique quality of the islands should not be compromised by thoughtless tourists but rather respected and preserved for its beauty and importance in the world of nature. Be mindful of your actions while on or around the Galapagos, and strive to leave no evidence of having ever even been there!

Telling about Seychelles, involuntarily you get off on language of the tourist prospectuses advertising this or that heavenly spot: it is dazzling the white beaches washed by tender waves in which motley small fishes lap; the violent thickets overflowed with paradise birds; the hospitable natives incessantly dancing something incendiary …

All it, certainly, is presented and on Seychelles – granite-coral archipelago in Indian ocean at southeast coast of Africa. Also it is presented, maybe, even more magnificently, than on the next Maldives or, say, on the far Bahamas and the Bermudas. Seychelles – absolutely especial place, unique not only the flora and fauna, but also an unimaginable civilized-cultural cocktail and surprising harmony between the nature and the person.

Seychelles cocktail
I can not be kept from a number of comparisons with located in the same region Maldive Islands. So, on Seychelles tourists appear at once in a thick of the good-natured and affable Seychelles people. On Maldives the local population is not less affable and good-natured, only here tourists rather seldom adjoin to it. The matter is that the Maldivian authorities develop mass foreign tourism within the limits of officially proclaimed policy of “prevention of the cultural conflict”. What can be “the cultural conflict”? And such: Maldives – the country Muslim, norms of Islam, as it is known, are no means always combined with free customs of foreign tourists. Therefore, to avoid misunderstanding, the Maldivian government has allocated for tourists about 100 desert islands and has constructed there everything that is necessary for smart rest. As a result tourists can relax as want, without disturbing and without shocking local population which in these original tourist “reservations” is few (except for the limited contingent of the housekeeping staff).

On Seychelles “the cultural conflict” cannot be by definition. After all the Seychelles people are a fruit of surprising synthesis of various races and blood – Arabs, Portugueses, the French and British colonists, Africans-bows, Indians, Malayans, Chineses. On Seychelles any ethnic combinations in which result there were Creole people of archipelago were possible. Here there are Creoles of the French origin, Creoles of the British roots, Creoles of the Chinese and Indian blood, and also mulatto and malabar Creoles – all of them are united by Creole language (on the basis of French), strong feeling of a national generality and Catholic religion. Over 90 % of the population profess Christianity, in overwhelming majority Catholicism, presence of Anglican church is appreciable, other Protestant currents are presented also. Moslems, hinduists and Buddhists too are, but in obvious minority. Besides Creole state languages are still English and French. Clearly that such ethnocultural ????? has initially predetermined the raised tolerance to the most scandalous displays from outside visitors.

“The Seychelles mash” has generated amazing culture, syncretic, but at the same time is unique original lines of many civilizations very unlike against each other combining in. For an illustration it is possible to result Alec Voga’s magnificent statement about Seychelles women: “In Seychelles women enough French to have a good figure, English to differ good manners, Asian to be exotic, and African to conceal in itself charm of savageries”.

And what miracle – Seychelles music! It combines, apparently, incongruous – music of slaveholders and music of slaves. The French minuets and kontrdances co-exist with mad African rhythms of dance “a ditch sega” which dance under palm trees by the light of a fire. In violent drumbeat the jingling of an iron triangle, string search of a guitar and rhythmical sounds from stirring of the drawn coconuts with rattling grains inside is intertwined.

The Seychelles kitchen which has incorporated components of the most various culinary cultures (French, English, Indian, Chinese), but “welded” them in own way is not less wonderful. A basis of Seychelles viands – rice and seafood which prepare with spices, vegetables and fruit. (Here one bananas over 15 kinds, and still a mango, kiwi, nuts, avocado, citron.) the most popular dish – fish with rice (pwason ek diri), but tourists, certainly, foods involve much more exotic: soup from an octopus, a breadfruit tree fruit, shatiny from a shark or a stewed banana. Submit even a ragout from a bat, but it for fans of a gastronomic extreme. Among local drinks are well-known dite zitronel – tincture of lemon mint, “kalu” – the fermented coconut juice reminding young wine, “bakka” – fermented juice of a sugar cane, local beer “Sejrbju”. Excellent wines from the republic of South Africa – the main trading partner of the island state are popular also.
