Most of those that have Australian temporary visas are often vacationers wanting to have a good time in the country. And since it’s just a short stay, they are likely looking for something very unique and exciting to tell folks back home. Luckily for them, there is, in fact, plenty of these interesting experiences right in the Australian outback.
One of these thrilling adventures that you, the tourist, would definitely want to join is the the Great Australian Cattle Drive. Here, you will definitely feel like a real cowboy, as you join professional cattle handlers as they herd off hundreds of these animals for a long journey. Not only that, you will also be able to enjoy seeing a wide variety sights along the way.
The Great Australian cattle drive is essentially a yearly operation to move cattle from South Australia to Queensland. This usually starts during April and runs for six weeks through the month of May (though the next one in 2010 will be in July). The event has been marked recently as a tourist attraction and there are plenty of tour packages that you get to join. Some offer you to join the sections of the drive while others give you the whole route (though for a heftier price).
Your journey begins in the town of Marlee, at the northern part of South Australia. Here, you will head out to the Anna Creek Station, one of the worlds largest cattle ranches, and join the preparation for the drive. Your main tasks here are assisting in counting and recording of the number of cattle, as well as marking them for identification. Here, you will also be assigned to a horse and will spend your first day getting used to each other (you and the horse, that is).
Once preparations are complete, then it’s time to roll out. You will be moving the cattle around 14 km each day during this one and this will take approximately three days. This is the part that you will actually ride off into the outback, so be sure that you have the proper attire on. This will also be your chance to see many interesting natural sites.
Interaction with your fellow riders and the locals will also be quite a good experience. You will be able to chat with with the crivers and learn more about the whole cattle driving experience, either while on the move or while in a break. For those who want to know more about Aboriginal people, this will also be a good chance, as they will be the ones to guide on a tour on their culture.
After all the day’s work, and upon your return to Anna Creek, you will welcomed with a hefty meal. Here, you will also be able to continue your chat with the others. Once you complete your tour, you can then bid the camp farewell and savor your new experience.
